The mangosteen is a tropical fruit, believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas. The mangosteen tree grows about 6 m (about 20 ft) high in very regular symmetrical form. The rind (pericarp) of the edible fruit is deep reddish purple when ripe. Botanically an aril, the fragrant edible flesh is sweet and creamy, citrusy with some peach flavor. It is typically found in tropical islands such as Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. It is considered an exotic fruit because it must be grown in consistently warm conditions, as it generally will not survive when exposed to temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
Mangosteen is typically advertised and marketed as part of an emerging category of novel functional foods sometimes called "superfruit" presumed to have a combination of 1) appealing subjective characteristics, such as taste, fragrance and visual qualities, 2) nutrient richness, 3) antioxidant strength and 4) potential impact for lowering risk against human diseases. Many of the traditional healers in Southeast Asia have already been using this legendary fruit for hundreds of years to promote healing. Taking advantage of the many benefits of mangosteen, this fruit had already been known for its healing properties by the locals in Southeast Asia where the fruit is grown. This tropical fruit has only begun to take on popularity in the West in recent years.
